The beaches

The main attraction of the island is certainly the beaches. The seaside extends over 40 km and provides white-sand strands. A special landmark is beach baskets that have a long-standing tradition on Usedom. The oldest basket manufactory of the country is located on the island. Moreover, in Heringsdorf stands a further huge attraction. Four-meter high and three-meter deep construction is considered the biggest beach basket worldwide - a perfect spot for your vacation photos.

The Wasserschloss Mellenthin, that name is Slavic origin and means “the center” is the central point of the island indeed. The Renaissance castle was erected in 1575 and houses nowadays a cafe and a hotel where you can enjoy cozy dining and charming atmosphere.

Benz

The commune Benz is also worth seeing. Here, the medieval Renaissance church St. Petri that fascinates visitors with the ceiling painting of the coffered ceiling and the baroque tower is situated. Besides, Benz can boast of a unique on Usedom Dutch-type windmill.

The Streckelsberg is an approx. 58-meter high cliff edge dune which guarantees breathtaking panoramic views.

Vineta is a mythical sunken town the inhabitants of which owned countless treasures. Nevertheless, the townspeople were punished for their arrogance and excessive lifestyle with a flood after which the city sank at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. From the Streckelsberg, you can see the riffs of Vineta. Until now, archeologists, regional ethnographers, and theater companies occupy themselves with the theory about the legendary town.

As Usedom has always been the island of fishermen, they couldn’t afford themselves various delicacies and contented themselves with products that were growing or swimming in front of their houses: potatoes, cabbage, turnips, and firstly fish. Herring is especially popular here. Each April the locals even organize the “herring weeks”. Usedom restaurants also offer flounder, cod, perch, zander, carp, pike, and a delicacy Ostseeschnäpel.

A beloved method of cooking fish is smoking. Directly at the beach, you can find such spots and can take a look at the assortment of fishermen, which they write on the desk with a chalk.

Getting there

By car

The bascule bridges connect the island with the continent. If you are traveling from the direction of Hamburg, you should go to the bascule bridge at Wolgast (B 105 to Stralsund, B 96 to Greifswald, B 109, and B 111 to Wolgast and further on to the island).
For visitors from the direction of Berlin, the bascule bridge is suitable at Zecherin (B 109 to Anklam and further on B 110).

By train

IC trains run from North Rhine-Westphalia via Hamburg or Berlin to Züssow. You can always get from there to the trains of the Usedom Baths Railway via Wolgast to the seaside resorts on the island of Usedom.

By plane

To reach the island, you need the airport Heringsdorf. You can easily get to Usedom from Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Zurich.

By bus

The long-distance buses of UBB circulate each day from Berlin and Hamburg (via Rostock) to the island of Usedom.
