Colombo
The capital is situated on the west coast of the island. It is a vast metropolis with a multifaceted culture. There are plenty of parks and playing fields. Football, rugby, cricket and tennis grounds are also popular. Mount Lavinia Beach is 11 km south of the city and offers surfing opportunities. Colombo Fort, close to the train station, is the centre of government and commercial activity. The area known as Pettah is a rather famous bazaar spot. There are also several Buddhist and Hindu temples in the capital city. The large Wilpattu National Park lies to the north of the capital and is home to elephants, sloth bears and leopards.
