The Oktoberfest is the largest folk festival in the world and now celebrated not only in Germany but also all over the world. As we know, the original festival comes from the city of Munich in Bavaria.
Why and when the celebration of the Oktoberfest was started? The forerunner of the Oktoberfest was the huge horse race in honor of the wedding of Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen and Ludwig of Bavaria. The royal couple married on October 12, 1810, and the first horse race took place five days later. This event developed into a festival where it was forbidden to serve alcohol at the time. Only since 1950 the festival has been opened with the traditional opening of the beer barrel and the words "O'zapft is!" and celebrated with lots of beer.
Every year thousands of people travel to Munich, especially for the spectacle to see how the chief burgomaster sets the first barrel abroach and thus opens the “Wiesn”. But you don't necessarily have to travel to Munich to experience the Oktoberfest. Below we tell you in which cities in Germany the right Oktoberfest atmosphere prevails. So get your dirndl and lederhosen out and celebrate with us!

8 Useful tips for a successful Oktoberfest, regardless of the city in which you celebrate
1. Traditional clothing is mandatory! You can buy a suitable costume in many shops in the city, or maybe you already have one in your wardrobe. The traditional Bavarian costume is: for men - a plaid shirt with leather pants and braces and a charivari (a silver chain) on the waistband.
2. For women - a dirndl: a petticoat, a dirndl apron, and a white dirndl blouse in the "Carmen style." The position of the bow on the dirndl is essential.
The bow on the right means you are in a relationship. The bow on the left means you are single.
3. Reserve a table. You can usually make a reservation from April.
4. Take cash with you. In many tents you can only pay in cash and the queues in front of the ATM can be very long.
5. If you don't get a seat in the beer tent, sit in the beer garden in front of it. Most visitors of the Wiesn are outgoing and in a good mood.
6. Leave backpacks and large bags at home. Only belt bags and small bags are allowed in the tents. There are controls at the entrance.
7. Put on comfortable shoes so that you can still enjoy the After-Wiesn-Parties after the official serving.
8. And most importantly: book your hotel as early as possible! Hotel prices are particularly high at Oktoberfest season, so it is better to book cheap accommodation at least six months in advance.
