Berlinale: Berlin International Film Festival
The Berlinale is the largest film festival in Germany and one of the most significant in Europe. The first Berlinale took place in the capital of Germany in 1951 and has been held annually since then. The festival usually lasts 10 days and every year around 300,000 tickets are sold to the public.
Alongside the film festivals in Cannes and Venice, the Berlinale is one of the central events in the cinema world. In contrast to other events of this kind, the focus here is mainly on "author's cinema" and "intellectual cinema". Around 400 films are shown here every year. Only feature films and short films that were made in the year before the festival and were not shown at other festivals can take part in the festival's competition program. The jury of the festival, consisting of prominent actors, writers, directors, and creative artists, attaches particular importance to the fact that films from all over the world should be presented at the Berlinale.
The primary award is the Golden Bear, which is presented for the best film in the main competition as well as for the best short film. The Silver Bear is awarded in several categories - "Best Director", "Best Actor", "Best Actress", "Best Music" and "Best Screenplay".
