Diversity is Garmisch-Classic’s middle name: three mountains - Hausberg, Kreuzeck, and Alpspitze shape its landscapes. When it comes to skiing in Germany, this area is on everybody’s lips. The Garmisch-Partenkirchen resort was once two separate towns of Garmisch and Partenkirchen, which were united on the occasion of Winter Olympics in 1936, but one can still feel the difference: Garmisch is full of modern vibes, while Partenkirchen has preserved its rustic flair. To this day international skiing events like the legendary Kandahar Race or the Alpine Ski World Cup take place at Kreuzeck. But don’t let the glorious history of the area scare you away - if you’re not quite ready to follow in the footsteps of professional skiers and make a vertical drop of 900 meters in 2 minutes yet, there’s also plenty of winter fun for everyone. Tracks and slopes map
Hausberg is a place for beginners and children to master the basics of skiing. The slopes here range from easy to middle levels of difficulty, that is why they attract so many families. In “Kinderland”, which is perfectly designed for little skiers, you can observe your kids safely learning new tricks from the comfortable spectator stand and then grab one of the thoughtfully prepared children’s menus at Drehmöser 9 or Kandahar 2 for them nearby. Only 7 minutes in a cable car separate your family from the pleasant thrill of the first ride.
To make your winter holiday particularly memorable you can get a video of you skiing at the BMWxDrive Skimovie section. The Snow Park at Hexenkessel makes Garmisch-Classic stand out too. The park features 4.000 m² of freeriding adventure with jumps, rails, boxes, and kickers. Toboggan run, sleigh trips, and skating courses are also at your disposal. The average snow depth during the season is 207 cm at summit elevation and 61 cm at base elevation.
How to get here?
When traveling by car from Munich, take the A 95, or B 23 Autobahn, if you drive from Augsburg. It will take you approx. 1 hour, and 3 hours on weekends and public holidays.
If the train is your kind of transport, go from Munich to Hausberg, where you’ll have to change trains and reach the Zugspitzplatt station. The travel time is roughly 80–90 minutes on the local and 60 minutes on the rush hour express.
Buses will take you to Garmisch-Classic from near the main train stations of Berlin, Innsbruck, and Munich.
Sights & Activities
Those, who are in the mood for sightseeing, should visit the Richard Strauss Institute and learn more about the famous composer’s life, who lived here for 40 happiest years. Architecture enthusiasts will be pleased to find out how many authentic churches are located here, and should absolutely see the Werdenfels Castle from the 13th century. Beautiful huts with walls of snow, decorated by artists from all over the world, are suited to every fancy: there are igloos for groups, families, couples, and even suites with sumptuous ice beds. The art themes change every season. One of the options for love birds is to build a love nest igloo together with their own hands and the help of experts. Can it get any more romantic? Sure! Some igloos are even equipped with whirlpools, the sauna is nearby and from time to time snow sculpture lessons occur here.
Don’t miss the chance to check out the “Maria Heimsuchung” mountain church, Erlebniswelt Gletscher museum, and the Zugspitze exhibition to find out all about the mountain’s history and local culture. Stunning views await on the 23 mountain observation decks like the AlpspiX. On the eastern peak, you’ll find the famous golden cross from 1993, make sure you’re wearing sturdy shoes before heading there. Night-birds are welcome to the disco Evergreen and Beck’s Stadl.

💡 Tip: Early risers can benefit from the new „Early Bird-Train“ to the Zugspitze from July 1st to September 3rd. The much endorsed ski resort Oberjoch with two cliffs Iseler (1.876 m) and Kühgundkopf (1.907 m) is situated in the highest mountain village of Germany - Bad Hindelang (825 m), that was acknowledged as the most family-friendly ski area throughout Bavarian Alps. Most of the pistes are of medium difficulty, there’s no shortage of easy ones too and 2km of difficult tracks are eager to give their accomplished riders a challenge. Nearly all the descents begin over 1200m above sea level, so they are awash with natural snow - average snow depth during the season is 60 cm at summit elevation and 43 cm at base elevation. |

Every day of the peak season from 08.30 till 16.00 o’clock the Easypark greets snowboarders and free-riders with a huge variety of kickers, boxes, tubes, a high rail, and many other fascinating obstacles for you to show off some skills. The ski center Oberjoch also provides numerous cross-country ski runs and a toboggan run. An absolute highlight of this place is romantic night skiing in the crispy and clear mountain air with floodlights leading you through shimmering snow. Parents will be happy to know that the ski kindergarten “Schneekinderland” on-site with an ‘enchanted forest’ and cute animals has everything their kids might need, along with other multiple children zones. One can literally reach any attraction on foot - the resort is small but mighty.

How to get here?
Travelers can arrive with the help of transfer services from the airports Allgäu Airport Memmingen, Friedrichshafen, Munich, Stuttgart, or Zürich.
The route for drivers is Autobahn 7 Ulm-Füssen - Oy-Mittelberg exit - 20 km along the street Bundesstraße 310. The parking lot is at Iselerbahn (€2,50/day).
Summer activities
Bad Hindelang is a popular hiking region with a rich diversity of trails (more than 300 km) for groups of any age. We recommend Salewa Klettersteig for pro hikers, Zipfelsfall waterfall for a romantic adventure, guided thematic paths for a vacation with children, and local mountain Hirschberg is a must for everyone.
There are even carefully thought out holiday options like an allergy-friendly vacation, eco-tourism, and stay on the farm with kids. The region is all-set for such kinds of sport as cycling, canyoning, climbing, and nordic walking.
The Hochmoor Oberjoch and Kneipp-treatment garden “Prinze Gumpe” bathing lakes are a magnet for wellness-savvys.

Nebelhorn in Oberstdorf

This adorable ski resort is one of the most versatile and the highest in Allgäu mountains, featuring a 2224 m vertical rise. Germany’s longest downhill run to the valley (7.5 km) and well-maintained slopes await absolutely everyone, whether you’re only planning to try out skiing or mastering your skills already. Areas at Speicherteich (water reservoir) and at Koblat, the slope “Seealpe” are perfect for beginners. The same could be said about a 90-meter long superpipe right underneath Höfatsblick´s top station. The NTC park at the Seealpe station offers gentle curves, snowtubing, skifox, snow cycling, air boards and has a lot more in store. The snow coverage is quite reliable during the season: 116 cm at summit elevation and 24 cm at base elevation. So there’s enough powder for your every whim - carving, snowboarding, freestyle shredding, etc. Do you want to see how professionals do it? Head to the Audi Arena ski jump, scene of the annual Four Hills Tournament. Note that après-ski fun like all-night parties is not common here. |

How to get here?
The route Ulm - Kempten - Oberstdorf is for trains - it’s also about 4.5 hours to Frankfurt and 2.5 hours to Munich. Cars should move from Kempten 40 km on the B19. Then an electric bus can take you directly to the Nebelhorn cableway. Alternatively, you could take the Iller-Radweg route on a bicycle.
Summer activities
Oberstdorf is replete with idyllic chapels and churches, so quiet excursions and hiking would be a nice idea for a peaceful weekend. Hindelanger Klettersteig is a route for advanced hikers. Thrill hungry sorts should try hand in Nordwandsteig trail with 600 m view downward and paragliding, families could take offspring on the educational adventure of Uff d'r Alp, if they are curious about nature and fond of animals. Visiting the Breitnachklamm Canyon, the deepest one in all of Central Europe, is not optional, make sure you don’t miss out on this thousands of years old gorge!

The paradise for toboggan and snow-tube enthusiasts is merely 80 km away from Munich. This area boasts picturesque lakes with the cleanest water there is in Bavarian Alps, surrounded by mountains Stümpfling (1,484 m) and Roßkopf (1,580 m). The first one offers easy and intermediate slopes, the second - challenging ones. A modern artificial snow system and average snow depth of 128 cm at summit elevation and 75 cm at base elevation ensure that winter athletes would never be disappointed here. The must-ski runs are Grünseeabfahrt & Rosskopfabfahrt. Night-skiing, with freshly groomed slopes and 2 km lighted runs, is possible every Thursday and Friday from 18.30 to 21.30 o’clock. |

Vivid ski tours take place in the wild nature of the neighboring Taubenstein mountain (1693 m).

Visit the peaceful town Tegernsee, that will surprise you with some of the prettiest and oldest buildings around, pop over to the ancient Tegernsee monastery building, that now hosts a traditional brewery. If local beer culture has caught your interest, go down to the medieval vault of Bräustüberl. Shopping is advisable in the town of Miesbach. Do rent a boat to soak up the lake scenery, enjoy the rustic atmosphere of cosy wooden huts with their sun terraces – which are ones of the most important landmarks of the region, by the way.
